  5. The latest methods for effective treatment. Clinics keep track of the latest trends in bariatrics and Latvian surgeons regularly attend international bariatric congresses, thus learning about technological developments within the field.

Services offered

If a person cannot get rid of excess weight through dieting and physical exercise, bariatric surgery or weight reduction operations give the patient the chance to start a new life. Bariatric surgery gives the patient the opportunity to:

  • eat portions that are as small as possible, concurrently providing the body with the required nutrients;
  • in a year of the operation, the patient can lose up 70% of his excess weight;
  • according to the results of the latest studies, long-term benefits are attained in 93% of cases.

Gastric resection or vertical gastrectomy

The goal of the operation is to reduce the patient’s stomach. During vertical gastrectomy surgery, using surgical clamps, the surgeon reduces the patient’s stomach by ~85%, shaping it in the form of a 'sleeve'. The separated section of the stomach is removed from the patient’s abdominal cavity. Surgery is conducted laparoscopically.

Gastric bypass surgery

Gastric bypass surgery has two objectives - to significantly reduce the patient’s stomach and to shorten the path along which consumed food is absorbed within the intestinal tract. The key result of gastric bypass surgery is that it serves to reduce weight not only faster and more effectively, but crucially - more durably. However, in the long-term, it is does necessitate more engagement on the part of the patient. Because major changes are made to the digestive tract during surgery, as a result of which absorption of nutrients is reduced, the patient must keep track to ensure that his body has sufficient levels of vitamins and minerals; if necessary, consuming additional amounts of them. Surgery is conducted laparoscopically.

Treatment process – step by step

Individual treatment steps may vary from patient to patient, and the detailed treatment process will be determined by each patient’s individual needs. In choosing to undergo bariatric surgery in collaboration with Latvian clinics, the patient can primarily reckon with the establishment of a close relationship electronically, followed by a visit to Latvia lasting for a week on average, during which the planned operation will take place.

Pre-surgery steps

Before surgery, the patient should observe a strict diet and reach the first desired weight reduction. The patient should arrange his calendar well in advance and plan at least two week for an optimal operative and post-operative period. The first 6-7 days should be allocated for the trip and the operation.

Surgical process

Time spent in Latvia:

  • The patient arrives at the clinic, settles down and meets his surgeon.
  • Before a bariatric operation, a general physical diagnosis needs to be carried out. Test need to be carried out to eliminate other illnesses and in order to prepare for surgery successfully.
  • The chosen operation is conducted under the guidance of a professional team of surgeons.
  • After the operation, the patient must remain at the clinic for another 3-4 days.
  • The patient will be encouraged to get up and go for a walk - with due caution - during the first days after the operation. After surgery, the patient will initially be allowed to consume water and special cocktails for nutrition. It is recommended that he or she eats his first liquid meal 4-5 days after the operation.
  • If the patient’s state of health is deemed to be satisfactory, the patient can safely travel home on about the fifth day after the operation.
  • Upon leaving the hospital, the patient will be presented with a report in English, which the patient should present to his family doctor in his home country.

Post-operation period

  • Our specialists encourage patients to plan an additional week of peace and quiet at home so they can adapt and get used to their new routine and lifestyle.
  • About a year after the operation when their weight has stabilised, the patient can consider the need for further operations such as plastic surgery that would help to remove surplus skin.

Patient reviews

Julian, United Kingdom
I was 22 stone with b mi of 42 and very unhappy with my life so I went to Latvia and had gastric bypass surgery. It's now about a week and a half since the surgery I have lost over a stone already and am never hungry. Well worth the cost it is slightly more expensive than some countries but in my opinion shorter travel distance and still under E U regulations makes a big difference. Don't go too cheap it's your life on the line.
I would recommend this clinic 100%.
It was great, I got met at the airport and taken to the private hospital all the staff spoke English and were very friendly. I saw the surgeon every day who kept me informed of everything that was happening. I felt safe going into the surgery which is very important.

If you are reading this then you might know what it’s like to fight a war with yourself every hour of every day – and how exhausting it can be and so you tire and give in only to be faced with shame followed by an extra few pounds/kilos on the scale and then the war starts again the next day… I tried everything to combat my weight and for a few years I won the battles by becoming “healthy” and “fit”. I ran marathons, cycled to work, did everything “they” say to do but food/weight was always my enemy and my internal struggle was always there.

John, United Kingdom
Living in Mainland Europe there is sometimes a stigma attached to developing countries such as the Baltic states, Poland etc…so although I had visited Latvia on a few occasions, I was a little bit nervous about having surgery abroad. However from the very first email, the fundamentals were explained with great detail and guidelines set out clearly for before and after. Upon arriving in Riga airport I was greeted by Ilva and made to feel comfortable, shown around Sigulda, and put up in a nice boutique hotel in the centre of the town. In the hospital everything was smooth and well explained, and the help from the medical staff and doctors was 10/10. The operation and after pain was nowhere near the same pain that I had read about…after 2 days I was walking around the town, and felt as if I was recovering already. The doctor provided me with updates and good, precise advice on what to eat and drink, and at what stage. This operation was only 3 months ago and has changed my life in a massive way. The best money I have ever spent!

Eventually I just got tired, burnt out, and stopped fighting. No more exercise, no more diets and naturally my weight ballooned. I lost the battle. It took about a year for me to admit even to myself that I needed help – I can say that now – I needed help and so I got help.

I contacted Ilva and she was wonderful – as were all the staff – no question was unanswered and I was so well taken care of. Three months in, 15 kilos down, back in the gym, back to being me and for the first time in my life I feel that I might have the tools to win this war …. even if it took a little help…

Lawona, Sweden
I couldn’t be more pleased with my stay and treatment in Sigulda hospital. Nurses and staff were friendly and caring, always ready to help with a smile. My room was comfortable and clean. Doctor Kozlovskis was very competent and visited me often. I’ve also had a quick recovery that I am certain is due to the wonderful care, I was given in hospital.

Roberta, United Kingdom
From start to finish my treatment from sigulda clinic has been amazing. My questions were all answered promptly and fully, everything was done for me, the flights arranged for both my daughter and myself. We were met from the airport and treated like royalty. The clinic is clean and smart and the staff all so friendly. The operation went very well and the care I received was second to none. I could not have asked for more. I would highly recommend this service.

Sandra, Sweden
I can really recommend Sigulda Hospital to anyone. Really satisfied with everything from the first moment I contacted them, really good communication, information and service.

Sandy, Sweden
I have only good things to say about my surgery at the Sigulda Hospital!
