On June 17, the project “Improving equal access to quality healthcare services at Riga Maternity Hospital by developing healthcare infrastructure” (project No. 4.1.1.1/1/23/I/003) concluded with the opening of the renovated operating room.

Riga Maternity Hospital, a member of the Latvian Health Tourism Cluster, has significantly developed its infrastructure and technological support with this project, strengthening the competitiveness of Latvian healthcare and its ability to provide world-class services to both local and international patients.

As part of the project, medical technology was renovated in the Prenatal Diagnostics Center of the Outpatient Department, as well as the renovation of the operating room, completely renewing its technological equipment and improving the treatment environment. Investments in infrastructure, modern technologies and digital solutions will provide an opportunity to monitor the health of patients even more qualitatively and provide safer care, especially in cases of high-risk pregnancies and complicated childbirth.

One of the most significant benefits is the new premium-class ultrasound equipment at the Prenatal Diagnostic Center. It allows for the identification of possible fetal development features at an even earlier stage of pregnancy, individual risk assessment, and more accurate pregnancy monitoring. The introduction of this technology also opens up new opportunities in research and the development of innovative medical solutions.

Another significant improvement is the acquisition of a mobile ultrasound system, which ensures higher accuracy and safety during obstetric anesthesia, including epidural analgesia and patient monitoring.

Taking into account the role of the Riga Maternity Hospital as a Perinatal Care Center, where assistance is provided for high-risk pregnancies and also for very premature babies up to the 28th week of pregnancy, the new mobile neonatal resuscitation and stabilization system is of particular importance. It allows for immediate initiation of newborn care after birth if necessary, while preserving the benefits of umbilical cord blood circulation, which is essential for the child’s adaptation and further development.

During the project, the operating room and staff rooms covering an area of 387.3 square meters were renovated and equipped, as well as 50 latest generation technologies for maternal and child care were purchased. The renovated environment has been designed with special attention to patient safety, infection control, comfort and ergonomic working conditions for medical staff.

As Santa Markova, Chairwoman of the Board of the Riga Maternity Hospital, points out:

Through the project, we have created a treatment environment that meets the highest standards of modern obstetric care. Special attention has been paid to patient safety, infection control and comfort, while providing modern and high-quality working conditions for the staff.

This development is a significant step in the future growth of Riga Maternity Hospital and the development of Latvian health tourism in general. Modern infrastructure, high-quality medical technologies and a patient-centered approach help create an environment in which Latvia can compete internationally as a safe and reliable healthcare destination.

The total cost of the project is EUR 2,478,344.47. Of this, eligible costs amount to EUR 2,051,046, including 85% financing from the European Regional Development Fund or EUR 1,743,389.10, state budget financing of EUR 285,710.71 and co-financing of Riga Maternity Hospital of EUR 21,946.19. Ineligible costs of EUR 427,298.47 were covered from the financial resources of Riga Maternity Hospital.

The implementation of the project was supervised by the Central Finance and Contracts Agency.
