Latvia has long been a popular medical tourism destination. By the end of the 18th century, an extensive network of spa treatment institutions had been established in Latvia. Many scientific research laboratories were also in operation. At the start of the 20th century, the number of medical tourists visiting Latvia had reached 60,000−70,000 a year.
Demand for qualified medics in Latvia has always been high, which is why medical education is also at a high level. Professional knowledge has significantly aided the development of medicine in Latvia. Nowadays, Latvia’s clinics are high level treatment institutions, where quality diagnostic and treatment services are ensured by a combination of the professional knowledge of our doctors and state-of-the-art equipment, cutting edge technology and high safety and quality standards. Here, services are received by patients from both Latvia and abroad.
Every year, Latvia is visited by several tens of thousands of medical tourists from Scandinavia, Russia, Western Europe and other countries. The country’s beautiful environment, convenient transport options and outstanding educational opportunities also attract budding doctors from various countries around the world, who are undertaking their medical studies in Latvia.
What is internal medicine?
Internal medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases. The doctor-therapist or internist will evaluate the patient’s health overall and draw up the treatment plan. It is the therapist’s task to provide consultations and suggest the best preventive health options, as well as to recommend which specialists the patient should visit to treat the specific disease.
When should I visit a therapist/internist?
Similar to a General Practitioner, a therapist treats problems caused by internal diseases (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary tract and endocrine systems). You can visit a therapist if you have symptoms of a cold, fever, cough, runny nose, high blood pressure, cardiovascular system complaints, urinary tract complaints and other problems. An internist will help to resolve major health problems. In brief, the doctor gathers all the information from the patient and tries to see the overall picture. The therapist helps the patient to determine which specialists to go to and which examinations should be performed. The therapist is a broad profile specialist, who also provides advice on the use of medicines, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, changing eating habits and on dealing with issues.
How should I prepare for a visit to a therapist?
During the first consultation, the therapist listens to the patient. The patient should bring along all excerpts and conclusions, as well as information about the analysis that he or she has undergone and the list of names of medicines the patient uses. During the visit, the doctor discusses the potential diagnosis with the patient and explains the possible causes. The doctor will answer the patient’s questions in detail and prepare the necessary treatment program or refer the patient to a specialist in the specific field. If necessary, the therapist may prescribe medicinal therapy.
How much does a visit to a therapist cost?
In terms of price, the price of the consultation depends on the chosen institution and doctor, as well as the additional services required. Usually, the price of a visit to a therapist starts from EUR 35, but one should bear in mind that additional examinations or analyses may be required.
