Individual steps will vary for each individual expectant mother, and a detailed preparatory and obstetrics process will be determined by each patient’s wishes, as well as state of health. In choosing to give birth at a medical institution in Latvia, the patient can primarily anticipate the development of a close relationship electronically, followed by a visit to Latvia for the birth. If possible, the mother is recommended to plan an advance visit to Latvia and to visit the maternity department before the critical period of pregnancy (around week 35 or 36 of pregnancy). Thus, the mother has the chance to discover the surrounding environment in which she will look forward to the birth of her baby, to ask any questions she is interested in and to choose medical personnel in person.
The general steps of the obstetrics planning process are as follows:
Latvia’s medical institutions offer a convenient procedure in relation to arranging the formalities related to childbirth. The baby’s birth can be registered in the Registry Office section at the relevant institution or on site on set days in the maternity department (depending on the chosen medical institution). Documents to be submitted:
After returning home, a birth certificate issued in Latvia can also be registered in the patient’s home country.
If one of the parents of a child born in Latvia is a citizen of another country, the child may obtain the citizenship of the other parent’s country if the parents desire this. The parents must inform the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs that they arranging for their child to receive the citizenship of another country, in order to update the information in the Population Register about the child’s other national affiliation. For detailed information about the granting of citizenship, see the Citizenship Law. After registration in the Register of Births, the child will receive a personal identity code and its parents will be issued with a birth certificate.
Which hospitals provide childbirth services?
We cooperate with four medical institutions that offer childbirth services – Jurmala Hospital, Liepaja Regional Hospital, Riga Maternity Hospital and Sigulda Hospital. All institutions employ high-class professionals such as gynecologists, neonatologists, midwives and children nurses who take care of families day and night during these important moments. Childbirth related services are provided in modern, cozy and comfortable facilities. Also relatives can stay on the premises. It is possible to participate in childbirth, as well as to stay with the baby and mother in the postpartum period in cozy rooms equipped with the Internet, TV, catering, etc.
Are childbirth services available on holidays?
All health care institutions work non-stop without holidays. Childbirth is one of the medical fields where precise planning is not possible.
What services are available?
All clinics offer a full range of services from maternal health care before pregnancy to baby health checks after birth. Main services include:
What types of pain relief are available?
The available procedures differ by clinic.
Popular types of analgesia with proven clinical efficacy are anesthesia and analgesia (spinal or spinal epidural). Laughing gas analgesia is also available, and it must be used properly to reduce the risk of side effects. Some exceptions might require childbirth analgesia with pain relief medication; however, pain relieving methods will always be discussed with the doctor based on the patient’s health status.
How to choose the right medical institution?
There are many factors to evaluate when deciding which hospital to choose for childbirth. Some include distance, offered services, information on staff and equipment, etc. An important factor for many is the availability of different types of childbirth – water birth, family birth, etc. Find out more about the range of services offered and the staff at specific hospitals.
The process is made significantly easier with a childbirth plan which considers various scenarios in certain situations. Such a plan is made by midwives in preparation for childbirth.
